App Icon Design Best Practices

Your app icon is the first impression a user gets of your application. A great icon communicates quality and purpose, while a poor one can lead to uninstalls. Follow these guidelines to ensure your icon shines on both iOS and Android.

1. Keep it Simple

Avoid cramming too many details into your icon. Remember, on a user's phone, the icon might be as small as a pencil eraser. Complex photographic details will turn into a muddy blur. Stick to bold, recognizable shapes.

2. Avoid Text

Do not include your app's name inside the icon itself. The OS already displays your app's name directly underneath the icon on the home screen. Text inside the icon is usually illegible at smaller sizes and makes the design look cluttered.

3. Optimize for Dark and Light Modes

Test your icon against both white and black backgrounds. If your icon is predominantly dark grey, it might disappear on a dark mode wallpaper. Consider adding a subtle stroke or using high-contrast colors to ensure it pops regardless of the user's theme.

4. Provide a Solid Background

Apple strictly forbids transparency in iOS app icons; any transparent pixels will be filled with black. Always provide a solid background color. While Android allows transparency for legacy icons, Adaptive Icons also require a solid background layer.
