What is an Android Adaptive Icon?

Introduced in Android 8.0 (API level 26), adaptive launcher icons can display a variety of shapes across different device models. For example, an adaptive launcher icon can display a circular shape on one OEM device, and display a squircle on another device.

How to use this tool for Adaptive Icons

While true adaptive icons in Android Studio require separate XML background and foreground layers, sometimes you need to quickly generate a pre-masked legacy icon or a fallback icon.

  1. Upload your master icon image.
  2. Click Advanced Editor to open the options panel.
  3. Under Output Shape, select "Circle" or "Rounded Square".
  4. Adjust the Scale and Padding to ensure your logo sits comfortably within the "safe zone" of the shape.
  5. Click "Apply & Regenerate" to download your perfectly masked mipmap folders.
